Summary

Beryl is between postings right now. He had to take a long leave of absence very shortly after first commissioning, due to a death in the family. He has finally informed Starfleet he is ready to return to active duty, and is awaiting posting to a starship. Beryl is secretly hoping for adventure, after spending a few years doing nothing but helping his family get by.

Appearance

Beryl Hammond is a tall redhead with well-groomed moustache. His exercise regime comes and goes, so he oscillates between a muscular frame and a “dad bod.” Now that he’s been assigned to a new command, he’s back in the gym, so for now he’s rocking the strong physique. Beryl has blue eyes, in which one can see an optical prosthetic if one looks closely – It helps him perform micro-surgery when necessary.

Personality

Beryl is a fairly quiet man. He speaks up when he has something to say that he believes is relevant, and tends to refrain from much small talk. He doesn’t believe in half-measures, so he takes pride in putting in the work to be good at his work. Beryl will go out of his way to help others, especially those close to him. Starfleet was his childhood dream, and now that he’s finally made it, he’s still a little stuck in awe of the possibilities now open to him. Beryl is eager to see new worlds, meet new species, and solve tricky space puzzles, but he isn’t blind to the realities of war either. He’ll pick up a phaser rifle if necessary. Someone has to defend the Federation, and he’ll do what he must.

History

Beryl Hammond always wanted to be a doctor. At least, that’s what he tells people when asked. The fact is, his family pressured him to go into the medical field starting at the ripe old age of 5. Beryl even believed this was his calling, for a while. The only problem was, when he finally reached actual medical school, he was bored. Beryl did seem to have a knack for healing, but something was missing. Beryl almost dropped medical school altogether to enlist in Starfleet, but his teachers convinced him not to give up on healthcare so quickly. So Beryl compromised, and immediately applied to Starfleet Medical Academy. Beryl got a bit of ribbing for being the “transfer guy” in the class, but he didn’t mind at all. This was it! This is what Beryl had been missing! For the most part, the cadets all shared two things Beryl had always felt: a desire for adventure, and an eagerness to make a difference. Plus it had the backdrop of healing the sick! It was the best of both worlds, as far as Beryl was concerned. Some of Beryl’s classmates were fans of quoting the legendary Admiral McCoy, but Beryl liked to put his own twist on it: “Damn it, I’m a doctor AND a scientist!”

When Beryl earned his commission, he had taken about 5 steps towards the terminal that would show him his first posting, when tragedy struck. His combadge chirped with a call from his sister: their parents had died suddenly in a shuttle accident. Beryl turned around, walked to the personnel office, and took an indefinite leave of absence. He had to go home and raise his younger sister.

Four years later, Beryl’s sister is old enough to care for herself. The moment she hopped on the transporter pad to head to school, Beryl jumped on himself, transported to Starfleet Headquarters, and begged to be reactivated. Now he’s on a shuttle, finally headed to his first post…
