Renato walked into sickbay, even putting this off for the last couple days and he couldn’t have put it off any longer. He wasn’t careful the captain could pull him from after duty for failing to comply with medical orders.
For a ship they didn’t look very big on the outside it was pretty big on the inside, run out thought to himself haven’t a hard time believing the ship had 20 decks but most of it contained within the saucer section itself. Sickbay was also another one of those places that seemed bigger than it really was.
“Captain.” Aria said as she looked over. She handed off the clipboard she held and walked over to where he stood. “Welcome to sickbay.” She knew he was here for his physical.
“Lovely place you have here, Doctor.” Renato said with a smile on his face. He looked around her room. Everything was neat and tightly. “The Paso Robles does clean up nicely, huh?” Renato asked.
“We like it.” Aria smiled in return. “I was just thinking of coming to find you.” She gestured toward one of the rooms. “I assume you are here for your physical.”
“I’m here for my physical.” Renato said, as she acknowledged her question. He believed they both knew that he did not want to be there. But this was a standard procedure, when boarding a new starship. Even though he was the commanding officer. He was not above the rules.
Aria let the way and waited for him to sit on the bio bed. She could tell he didn’t want to be here, it seemed all silly to her but then she was the physician. “Before you know it you will be on your way.” Her eyes met his. “Is there anything going on with you that I need to be aware of?”
“I’m not exactly sure what you mean by that doctor. If you’re asking if I’m in good health, I would have to say yes. Psychologically I’m here so I should care for something I guess. But Starfleet said they do want me to talk to our counselor I assume that’s what you’re probably referring to?” Renato even though giving command and passing the academy, any officer that participated and showed signs of mental distress were ordered into therapy.
So far therapy only told him how he needed to change his life if he wanted to work on his relationship with his family. At least his wife came with them onto the Paso Robles. So that was somewhat of a good sign.
“I was referring to any physical ailments.” Aria said quietly. “Usually I find patients like to inform me of anything, like say migraines for instance, themselves rather than me reading it in their charts.” She took a deep breath. “Are you allergic to anything?”
“Physically I’m fine doctor, sorry just so used to doctors always asking about my psychological wellness. I am suffering from no fatigue, no migraines or no other bodily discomforts that I’m aware of.” Renato suggested to the good doctor.
Aria picked up an instrument and started her scan. “This shouldn’t take too long and you will be on your way.”
“I’m sorry Doctor, I’m just a little on edge I didn’t mean to come across snippity.” Renato said, thinking to himself that maybe he was being a little too harsh on his new doctor. She was a little ranking Ensign. He felt bad hoping that he wasn’t intimidating her..
“It’s fine.” Aria insisted, feeling much better at his words. “I know most crew don’t like getting their physical.” She said as she continued checking him over.
“Well that’s one way looking at it, I just assumed you want to talk to me about my psychological well-being.” Renato said knowing that she was a doctor, and she had every right to inquire. He was surprised that she really had into this point.
“I felt it was best to get the physical out of the way first.” Aria smiled. “And I did give you a chance to speak earlier.” Her eyes held a hint of humor. “We will get there, Captain.”
“I don’t know if I should commend you for being cunning, or tricking me into talking about it on my own.” Renato said with a big grin, then he started laughing.
Aria laughed as well. “You are onto my secret.” Aria replied, liking that he wasn’t hiding his emotions. Finishing up she stepped back. “Now, comes the hard part.”
“I dare to ask what the hard part is?” Renato said has he waited for her, to tell him what the hard part was.
Aria smiles, as the a scene fades away with her looking to the captain. “I think it’s time to schedule an appointment to meet with the counselor.”
