Armon III time unknown

Dazed and waking in the dark, Marcus heard voices crying out in fear and pain. His head was swimming with voices crying out for help. A four-fingered hand broke through the rubble and helped Marcus free.

As he emerged from the rubble, he realized his hazmat suit was shredded to pieces. His eyes blinked in the light as he adjusted to being in the open again.

“Are you ok, Doctor?” It was Izkra Both that had helped him free.

Marcus took a moment to collect his thoughts and clear his mind; his head was pounding, but despite the throw and hard land, he had somehow managed to only end up scraped and banged up. “I am alive, at least.” He said, “Was it the Vaadwaur?”

He then sensed a familiar presence as the Captain and his away team walked up. But there was a small contingent of Vaadwaur with them.

Captain Spiff said, “No Doctor, not this time. They actually came hoping for our help as the flu got to their people as well.”

Izkra nodded. “As he said, Doctor, I’m sad to say some of our people had snuck aboard one of the shuttles. They blamed the Federation for not protecting us well enough. It was they who launched the torpedo and not the Vaadwaur or truly your own people.”

Captain Spiff said, “They got to the weapons controls and launched it; I think they thought they were targeting the Vaadwaur. But not having the experience, they hit the planet instead. As soon as they realized, they turned themselves in.”

Izkra said, “The facility was hit hard; we aren’t sure if anyone survived. But the search goes on; our local scanning system was knocked out, so our own scanners don’t seem to work. Your tricorders are having a hard time with our cold-blooded bodies.”

Marcus rubbed his head and realized he was missing something important. “KIM!” he started to run towards the facility as his shoulder was grabbed, the Captain’s hand on his shoulder.

“It’s too late, Doctor; I know you are hurt. But I need your abilities right now to help us find survivors. You are the only one with empathic and telepathic abilities.” Captain Spiff said, handing him the canvas McCoy era bag from Anvers quarters on the ship. “I brought you this and a shuttle full of medical supplies. Between you and a mild reprogramming of the tricorders we can recover them all. The Vaadwaur even agreed to help search as a good faith gesture. I need you to give us a place to start.

Marcus opened the medical kit and put together a painkiller and concussion stabilizer to let him focus. He stood still and opened his mind again pushing his abilities out wide.

“Most of the minds I sense are south of what was the medical facility. There are two still alive in the medical facility they will need rescue first. ” Marcus cried out even with painkiller opening his mind this much was not a good idea with the concussion. He nearly passed out again.

Izkra said “Those are likely all those trapped, give your officer to me. I have another medical facility we reserve for the vips in a bunker for attacks. Your officer has most assuredly earned that from us.”

Spiff sighed the Captain nodded “Fine, thank you Consular Both.” He bowed to Izkra.

Izkra and two of her guards took Marcus to the bunker and helped him on a bed. Izkra handed him a PADD. “Here you go Doctor.”

“Kim’s Padd.” Marcus said holding it close

“Yes” Izkra said as they gently treated him “I took it from where we pulled you out. It’s intact.”

Marcus nodded “With this we can replicate the vaccine.”

Izkra nodded as Marcus felt his head clear the pain shrunk away. “There you go Doctor. You have full access to this bunker and it’s lab.” Izkra said. “First go though and help your people find mine.”

“Thank you Consular Izkra.” Marcus rose and bowed to Izkra

Izkra made what Marcus would consider a smile and he could feel her happiness “Doctor to my people you will be a hero, let’s dispense of the pleasantries just Izkra is fine. Now go.”

Marcus nodded and ran back out into the city ready to help the Armonians and soon he figured the Vaadwaur to.

I had expected the attack to have come from the Vaadwaur and not from the Armonians themselves. The Vaadwaur offering to help is an interesting perspective as well. I loved how Marcus is still working hard to take care of everyone else when he himself is injured and should rest. Thanks for a great read!

So this is the first Nightfall story I've read and boy was I surprised to see the Vadwaur helping! I'm very interested to see how this twist develops further. Also, great to see some classic Starfleet determination: helping others even when you're down. Keep it up!

It shows that the vaadwaur are not all bad, or are they? They might have an hidden agenda, but this post shows the emotional anxiety of something major happening and it is great put to words. Well done

I jumped into this cold without having read any of the preamble, and I'm actually kinda glad I did because I have so many questions that make reading the only viable response to finding out led to how we got here, and where it goes from here.
